We recently attended an Environmental and Social Safeguards Capacity Building Workshop in Nanyuki in the month of June, which was in continuation of our 4-year partnership with the Kenya Industry Entrepreneurship Project (KIEP).

Present at the workshop were other implementing partners of the project such as the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) among other partners.

During the workshop, we were able to draft a Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) which would enable the association to address any complaints that would arise during the project implementation period. This GRM tool would enable the association and other stakeholders involved in the project to submit grievances during the course of the project, which would be received by a GRM panel.

In the course of the workshop, we also learned about the following:

  • Mainstreaming the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) in all KIEP activities and operations
  • Developing skills on Environmental and Social Screening, preparation of Environmental plans and Monitoring Reports on Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs)
  • Mainstreaming and operationalize the Grievances Redress Mechanism (GRM) into all project activities
  • Acquiring skills on the implementation /operationalization of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs)

The workshop was insightful in continuation with our objectives as an association to ensure environmental and social safeguards are achieved within our membership.

As the project continues, we are looking forward to working with our members!
